Like many churches, Transfiguration Catholic Church and School in Oakdale, Minnesota, took out loans to make campus improvements. These efforts supported the long-term growth of the parish, school and ministries but also led to $7.4 million in debt. Since 1998, the parish has conducted four capital campaigns, collecting over $3.4 million. Servicing the debt remained a challenge. Annual interest payments of approximately $175,000 were suffocating the parish. Transfiguration partnered with the Steier Group for the Together in Gratitude, Forward in Hope debt reduction campaign. The Steier Group advised Transfiguration to make additional payments to the principal as cash gifts were received. This helped create momentum for the campaign and allowed the parish to reduce the principal of the loan by nearly $1 million just during the Steier Group’s time on site. The debt reduction campaign accelerated the parish’s paying off the debt by 70%. It saved the parish $155,000 in interest. Thanks to a successful campaign, the debt will no longer hinder the Transfiguration community.
