THE CHALLENGE
For more than 150 years, the Ministry of St. John Lutheran in Seward, Nebraska, has planted the seeds of God’s Word, nurturing faith in Jesus through worship, education and service. Since its founding in 1870 and the establishment of the school in 1884, generations have stepped forward to provide spaces worthy of this mission. However, time had taken a toll on the current facilities. The primary school building, constructed in 1929 with mid-century additions, no longer met the needs of modern education, accessibility, safety or the growing youth ministry. Classrooms, gathering spaces and support facilities constrained ministry rather than empowered it. Leaders knew the mission had not changed, but the places for worship, learning and fellowship must. The question arose before the congregation: would this generation step forward to prepare the ministry for the future?
THE VISION
With a shared commitment to faith, unity and excellence, a strategic, phased plan took shape for the St. John Lutheran community to follow. The vision was bold and mission-driven, but most of all, it was necessary. The plan included:
- Replacing the 1929 school building with a new, three-story, 35,000-square foot school facility featuring 10 classrooms, two specials classrooms, an elevator for accessibility, youth ministry space, locker rooms, upgraded offices, enhanced security and a new west entry with improved traffic flow.
- Constructing a new gymnasium along with dedicated band spaces, youth commons areas and additional classrooms.
- Expanding and enhancing existing spaces, including the cafeteria, kitchen and upgrades to the current gym for practice and community use.
THE SOLUTION
St. John’s Lutheran partnered with Fellowship Development to bring professional expertise, spiritual depth and proven structure to the ambitious fundraising effort. The Fellowship Development team walked alongside church leaders providing wisdom, organization and encouragement while helping recruit a strong leadership team and campaign committee. The campaign manager maintained momentum and clarity while Fellowship Development’s design and communications support ensured the vision was both clearly articulated and deeply inspiring. Campaign materials emphasized the spiritual heart of the Rooted in Faith, Growing for the Future Capital Campaign, grounding every step in faith, prayer and stewardship. This partnership equipped staff, church leaders and donors with the confidence needed to succeed. Fellowship Development empowered the Ministry of St. John Lutheran to move forward in unity, rooted in faith and growing in confidence for a bright future.
“We interviewed several firms. The Steier Group was the unanimous choice of our committee. The Steier Group has a history of successfully working with schools (and churches) that could not be emulated by their competitors. Their history of helping ministries achieve at the levels discovered in their feasibility studies was also impressive.”
