For more than 60 years, St. Pius X Catholic Church and School in New Orleans strengthened the Catholic community in Louisiana. But the parish suffered in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, even while aiding relief efforts. Many longtime parishioners moved away after the storm. In their place, a vibrant group of young families moved in. They had a passion for their faith but lacked a history of giving. Nearly a decade after fixing up the church building, it was time for the parish and school to renew itself with updates. That included a new arts and sciences building, a canopy over the church entrance to shelter parishioners from bad weather and renovation of a parish multipurpose facility. Taking a cue from St. Pius X’s motto – to renew all things in Christ – the parish embarked on a major fundraising effort. A comprehensive communications plan was key to rallying support for the campaign. Lay speakers from different walks of life gave testimonials about the campaign projects at Mass. The talks helped inspire support from the community, and the capital campaign raised more than $2.5 million.
