Carter is a parishioner of St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Omaha and served on the parish school board. He is also Founder of Christendom Academy, a K-8 classical school in Omaha. Carter serves on the Legacy Planning Committee for the Archdiocese of Omaha.

On their honeymoon in Rome, Carter and his wife met Pope Francis.

Carter enjoys reading, writing, playing chess, and getting outdoors with his family.
