The Madeleine Parish and School faced a common problem for many Catholic churches and schools – a lack of space. But this Catholic community in Portland, Oregon, had a unique solution sitting unused in its own community – the Old Church. Home to the parish’s first Mass on Christmas Day in 1911, the Old Church served the parish for more than 40 years until a new church was built in 1955. Since then, the building had served as little more than the church attic. But this beautiful old building holds much promise. With that in mind, The Madeleine community embarked on its first full-fledged capital campaign since 1984. Renovating the Old Church into a new multipurpose space galvanized the community and led to a successful campaign, including a $1 million challenge gift.
