The most recent capital campaign for St. Henry Catholic Church, in 1988, had not gone smoothly. The campaign sowed distrust within the Gresham, Oregon, parish, raising only 40 percent of goal and spending some of the funds on projects not mentioned in initial campaign communications. Nearly 30 years later, parish leadership knew it was time to try again. They turned to the Steier Group to help mend fences and rebuild trust in the parish. Through an extensive communication effort, mostly from the church’s pulpit, parishioners unified behind a goal. The resulting fundraising campaign – dubbed Growing to Serve: More than Bricks – proved successful, especially after three challenge gifts resulted in a surge of donations during commitment weekend that helped the parish make strong progress toward its goal of building a new welcome center. In 2019, the parish partnered with the Steier Group again for the Growing to Serve: To the Finish Line Capital Campaign, which provided another strong boost to the effort.
