Malta House

Malta House is the only transitional living program in the state of Connecticut, serving pregnant and parenting women 18 and older. Women experiencing homelessness across the tri-state area rely on Malta House for shelter, childcare, counseling, education and workforce assistance with the goal of becoming financially independent. In a state where 80 percent of women in this situation do not receive the public assistance they need, Malta House runs at 100 percent of capacity year round and greatly needs more space to house and support women and their babies. The 21-year-old nonprofit partnered with the Steier Group on its first-ever capital campaign to renovate and move into a building to increase their square footage by three times. For an organization with a small staff and a shoestring budget of $750,000 a year, undertaking an effort like this was daunting but necessary. In 2019, the campaign surpassed the Steier Group’s projection by raising more than $3.2 million. Its new home, “MH2”, is currently under construction and will receive new mothers and babies by the end of 2020.
