St. Dominic Catholic Church

THE CHALLENGE

St. Dominic Catholic Church, a vibrant and diverse inner-city parish in Denver, faced a unique set of challenges when launching a capital campaign to restore and preserve its nearly 100-year-old church building. While the parish has the tight-knit feel of a small-town community, many parishioners travel from across the Denver metro area and beyond to attend Mass, making it difficult to coordinate personal visits and campaign engagement. Additionally, the parish serves a wide range of constituents, from economically challenged households and working professionals to a strong and active Hispanic community, all of whom were called upon to rally behind a campaign that would secure the future of their historic church.

THE VISION

The vision for the campaign was to restore and preserve the beloved St. Dominic Church while ensuring its long-term viability as a spiritual home for future generations. Key goals included:

  • Restoring and preserving the historic church structure and details like windows and masonry.
  • Enhancing accessibility and infrastructure like lighting and cooling systems, as well as exterior gutters.
  • Painting the church interior.

THE SOLUTION

To overcome the logistical challenges of a geographically dispersed congregation and exceptional need for the historic parish, St. Dominic leadership chose to partner with the Steier Group. The team coordinated a strategic volunteer plan, including virtual meetings and weekend-only access to parish offices for in-person visits. Volunteers were trained and equipped to conduct visits either locally or at the parish during weekends, ensuring consistent engagement throughout the campaign. Despite the challenges, the community responded with overwhelming generosity, raising four times the annual offertory through a mix of parishioner support and ongoing grant applications. The leadership team’s desire for a highly professional campaign was met with in-house services from the Steier Group, including graphic design, strategic planning and grant writing support. With the church already drawing attention for its historic value, the Upon This Rock – Preserving Our Home Capital Campaign laid the foundation not only for the church’s physical restoration but for growth in generations to come.

“This was the first time our small but mighty parish had attempted anything of this magnitude. We are thrilled and cannot stop thanking God for this partnership and the guidance to accomplish so very much. Fundraising is never easy. But the Steier Group helped make it successful and fun by giving us the resources and confidence needed to execute the plan. As a result, St. Dominic's is in an incredibly positive position to meet the critical structural needs of our iconic home of worship. I would highly recommend the Steier Group to any parish considering a planning study and capital campaign.”

Fr. Luke Barder, O.P., Pastor, St. Dominic Catholic Church
