Fundraisers are continually seeking to understand what inspires donors to give. Research from Charities Aid Foundation found that 96% of donors cite a sense of moral duty as a key influence. While that motivation is meaningful, duty alone does not create the deeper emotional connection that inspires sustained, generous philanthropy.
Mission awareness helps move donors from obligation to relationship. Nonprofit marketing expert Beth Brodovsky describes this progression as “know, feel, do”: people first learn about the mission, then form an emotional connection to it and finally feel inspired to act. For churches, dioceses and other faith-based organizations, this means communicating the mission in ways that help donors understand it, personally connect with it and see how their generosity can make a difference.
Educate: Help donors know the mission
Catholic churches and dioceses have a built-in foundation for mission awareness. Still, parishioners may not always see the full impact of the Church beyond Sunday Mass. During the public phase of its capital campaign, Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Woodland, California, used a year-end bulletin reflection to highlight ministries in action, including worship and sacramental life, community outreach and fundraising progress. This kind of consistent education helped parishioners better understand the parish’s impact and was one of the ways the campaign ultimately raised $7 million – well beyond expectations.
Parishes can build this awareness in simple, repeatable ways:
- Dedicate a bulletin corner to brief “mission moments” that spotlight ministries, outreach events or parish life in action.
- Share parishioner testimonials about why they worship, serve and give through the church.
- Use statistics, stories and photos to show how the mission is changing lives.
Connect: Help donors feel the mission
Understanding what motivates each donor gives organizations an opportunity to meet donors where they are and personalize the giving experience. At Arrupe Jesuit High School, another former Steier Group client, donors are invited to engage directly with students through mock scholarship interviews and office skills training as students prepare for Work Study jobs. Students also handwrite thank-you notes to donors, creating a personal connection to the people and purpose behind the mission.
Inspire: Help donors act on the mission
When organizations make the mission tangible, show how it changes lives and invite donors into a personal relationship with that impact, generosity follows. Risen Christ Catholic Church in Boise, Idaho, checked all these boxes in advance of its final capital campaign appeal, Commitment Weekend. By inviting parishioners to participate in 48 Hours of Prayer, the parish gave them an opportunity to discern their commitment while lifting the campaign, parish and one another in prayer.
Mission awareness turns information into connection and connection into meaningful action. By educating, connecting with and inspiring their communities, churches, dioceses and faith-based organizations can cultivate lasting relationships that strengthen both the mission and the people called to support it.
