Year-End Gifts - Fact or Fiction

At the end of each year, nonprofits around the country scramble to produce direct mail appeals and many other efforts towards harvesting those year end gifts. Is the "year-end gift" alive and well, or is this wishful thinking around the holiday season?

The answer is there's a little bit of truth to both sides. December is, in fact, the month of the year when more charitable gifts are made than any other month. However, this makes for a very competitive market for securing those gifts. You are certainly wise to put the interests of your organization in front of your donors at this time of year.

Major donors do, at times, find themselves in a position where they need to make some significant gifts for tax purposes. In order to increase your chances of being the recipient of these gifts, you should ensure that your major donor program includes, at the end of every year, a personal visit to again put your needs in front of them in order to receive that possible major gift.
