Inside-Out Fundraising

The notion of "inside-out" fundraising forms the basis for all successful development efforts, especially the capital campaign. Unfortunately, we encounter countless nonprofit organizations which fail to grasp this concept and fall prey to the dangerous premise that its mission is so overpowering and enticing that outside support will serve as the foundation of their campaign. This is simply not the case.

Any successful fundraising effort must start with the people who are closest to and most knowledgeable of the organization—the board of directors. Before you can expect community support and new donors to enter the mix for your cause, the members of the board must lead the effort by committing their dollars first.

Because some boards are not composed of major prospects, the emphasis needs to be placed first on 100% participation. Ideally, when you are recruiting board members, you are determining financial potential before asking anyone to serve. Clearly, board members can contribute to your cause in a great variety of ways but in that mix you are wise to include major gift potential.

Getting your board members to make their gifts first will simply position your organization for success!
