Consistency in your Development Efforts
It has long been said there is never a "best" time to raise money. So long as you have real needs, a mission to guide you and a well-defined action plan, you will be well positioned to have your constituency support you. The key is consistency in the message as well as consistency in your methods.
In order to further the organization's mission with potential donors and with the community, you must implement a successful and comprehensive communications strategy. A few communication vehicles you might consider:
· Articles in monthly or quarterly newsletters
· Website updates
· E-mail updates
· Media opportunities
It is critical that you develop consistent, multiple "touches" with your audience over a period of time. With increased awareness and understanding of the mission, prospects will be motivated to support the effort with their time and financial support.
Special events also give you an opportunity to communicate your message while raising awareness and raising funds. Set up a calendar of events, which take place at the same time every year, establishing consistency and awareness with your donors and friends. A byproduct of marketing these events is additional touches and opportunities to share your message. Many organizations host an annual fundraiser or a yearly golf tournament, but here are some other ideas to consider:
· Donor recognition events
· Family friendly concerts
· Trivia nights
· Socials, picnics, BBQs
A critical but often over-looked development practice is the personal contact with the head of the organization. Is the pastor, principal, CEO, director or president consistently reaching out to your top tier of supporters? If not, you may be missing out on the most effective way to ensure these critical supporters remain loyal to your cause. Once a week send off a hand-written note to three to five key supporters, thanking them for their ongoing support. Over the course of a year you have reached out to 150-250 of your top donors!
Assuming you are asking your donors for the financial support upon which your organization depends, and you are consistent in your message, putting these methods into practice should position you and your organization for success.
